Schmidt's Deodorant review + giveaway!!!

If you follow the green beauty blogosphere at all, you have heard about Schmidt's Deodorant* ($9 for 2 oz). I was super excited to try out this brand, because they are all about creating safe, effective products that come in amazing scents and have a luxurious feel. They're also based in my hometown of Portland, OR, where many amazing natural products are made, so I had a hunch this would offer something special.

I wasn't let down in the slightest; this deodorant is awesome. Let's talk about the unique texture first. It has a drier consistency than others I have tried, which helps it absorb moisture and keep your pits dry. It doesn't stick together very much when it's kept in a cool place, so you kind of have to take a couple pieces, rub together between your fingers to warm up, and then apply to your underarms. It comes with a handy spatula that makes scraping a piece out easy, but it does a few tries to get the application down. Only a small pea-sized amount is needed for each arm, so I can't emphasize enough what a great value this product is.

I wanted to throughly test this product in some harsh conditions, and over a longer period of time. A lot of times deodorants will work great for a while, but then will suddenly start causing irritation. Over about two months, I wore Schmidt's every day. I walk a lot outside, and the hot weather and humidity in my climate leads to lots of sweating, whatever you are doing. My "trials" culminated in a 4 mile run in 92 degree weather with 62% humidity, about as sweaty as you can get. After my very thorough testing, I can say with certainty that I never started to stink while using this deodorant. It keeps me fresh and dry all day long! I think the secret is the hops extract, which helps kill the bacteria that cause bad odors. The formula also contains baking soda, which makes it super effective, but can also cause irritation in some individuals. I've experienced the horrible rashes with other brands, but with this one I only experienced mild irritation, even with prolonged use. If this is an issue for you, it can be easily remedied with an "armpit toner," though I don't personally find that necessary.

My favorite scent is Bergamot + Lime. It's a combination of two pretty common essential oils, but when they come together, the scent is out of this world. Think super fresh, sparkling, tangy margarita mix. A close second is Ylang Ylang + Calendula. It's a sweet, floral fragrance with a distinct note of licorice. I'm not normally a fan of licorice but I absolutely love it in here. Lavender + Sage is a more straightforward, herbaly scent, and Cedarwood + Juniper is an earthy and woodsy unisex fragrance. A fragrance free version is also available, if you prefer your deodorant unscented. The scents are a huge highlight of the line, and I think there's really something for everyone here. One caveat: I find on super sweaty days the scent itself often fades, but not to worry, the odor protection stays.

Now it's your turn to win one. Schmidt's Deodorant is generously providing one of their products to one lucky reader. U.S. Only. You choose the scent:

  8. So bummed that it's US only. I.ve always wondered about solid deodorants and this seems like such a great product. The little spatula is also so cute.

  38. This deodorant is one of the best I have used! It is a little weird to use it as paste to place it under your arms but I feel it works better than most of the organic deodorants out there on the market. I really prefer to make my own but sometimes that can just be a hassle. Thanks for the review!
