Cleansing with Blissoma

Blissoma is one of my favorite skincare brands, and if you've ever tried any of their formulas, you know that they're special. I really enjoy the herbaly-yet-modern feel, and their products are so darn pure. They are also the most natural brand that I've come across that doesn't rely on simpler, water-free formulations. The textures and scents of the products are really beautiful and unique, and the price point is not inflated at all, despite the high quality ingredients.

It was on Blissoma's blog that I first read about the importance of using a slightly acidic cleanser, so I was very excited to try their two perfectly-balanced offerings in this category, Free Herbal Gel Cleanser and Makeup Remover* and Fresh Mild Rice Facial Cleanser(each $31.99 for 4 oz). Both of the cleansers are excellent products for my acneic skin, but I could easily see either of these working for almost any skin type.

Free Herbal Gel Cleanser on the left, Fresh Mild Rice Facial Cleanser on the right.
The Free Herbal Gel Cleanser and Makeup Remover is an unscented, slick-textured gel that feels downright soothing on my skin. This unique product contains soapbark extract as a natural, mild surfactant, but I find that it doesn't foam up very much. That's nothing to complain about though; it easily dissolves makeup an oils and rinses off without leaving any residue on the skin. It also cleanses very throughly; I can even use it to remove an oil cleanser. At the same time, it is incredibly gentle, and I get no tightness or irritation after use.

Like all Blissoma products, it has an exceptional ingredients list, but this cleanser has particularly interesting additions like Yerba Mate and plantain. Yerba Mate, a popular tea-like beverage in South America, contains 196 active compounds including many antioxidants. Plaintain contains astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, and has traditionally been used for would healing. In this context, it's a helpful addition for acne spots. Olive leaf and red raspberry leaf also provide astringent properties, and linden, one of my favorite herbs, is included for its soothing effect.

If you wear a lot of makeup, or you like that ultra-clean feeling, this is the one to try.

The Fresh Mild Rice Facial Cleanser is Blissoma's face wash that's targeted towards problem skin. Fresh is the exact opposite of what many mainstream brands tout for acne-prone skin: harsh, foaming products that strip the skin of its natural oils. Instead, it's made of an emulsion of apricot kernel, coconut, hemp, and sunflower oils that gently remove excess oils while leaving behind the good ones. The cleanser has a green, citrusy scent, and a light creamy texture. Like the Free cleanser, it is incredibly gentle and feels soothing on the skin. It really can't remove makeup, but since it can get excess oils off, I often use it as the second step in a double cleanse routine. I first massage an oil into my face to remove foundation and mascara, wipe it all off with a hot wash cloth, then cleanse my face with this product.

I like that Fresh cleanser contains lots of active botanicals to fight acne: willow bark extract, a natural source of salicylic acid, plantain extract, chickweed and olive leaf; plus soothing herbs like marshmallow root and chamomile. The overall experience of this cleanser is just amazing. The texture and scent are so pleasant, and it soothes the skin and treats acne at the same time. The only downside is you've got to double up with something else if you wear makeup, but it's totally worth it for me.

I started using both of these cleansers when I became really serious about using only products in my routine that I was sure would improve the pretty bad breakouts I was experiencing. And I am so pleased with both of these, along with a couple other key products, these cleansers have helped completely turn my skin around. If you are looking for some ultra-natural, gentle-yet-effective products, Blissoma once again proves that it's got you covered.

    1. Definitely!! I have VERY breakout prone skin and things have calmed down so much since I started using these (and raw honey treatments, and a serum I will talk about soon!)

  2. Did either of these dry your face out at all over prolonged use? They look awesome...

    1. No, not at all! Granted, I almost never get truly dry skin. But they are both very gentle and non-stripping. I think the Fresh cleanser in particular would be great for dry skin, as its just an emulsion of oils and herbal infusions.

  3. Can I just say THANK YOU (yes, I am shouting!) for describing the scents of these products? I am very picky about smells and appreciate reading whether products I'm interested in trying are unscented, or mildly scented. I find many natural products to be too strong-smelling for my taste. Lovely blog and again, thank you ( =

    1. No problem, I always try to do that! Free is unscented and Fresh has a very light scent for sure. I also forgot to mention Fresh has tiny rice grinds to gently exfoliate, but you can hardly feel them at all.
